I just joined your site-again. I'm an old bogan purist-from Melbourne-nearly forty, who remembers what it meant AT THE TIME! Was a kid during the sharp era. Don't read this if it's too much.

 Now I've only returned recently to Oz after many years travelling, and, as a Victorian, I remember Bogan (before the term had even been coined)-the early eighties black t-shirt , ACDC transfer (or velvet lettering),Winnie Blues shoved up the sleeve, panel-vans, Kingswoods, Bundy, VB, Bourbon(and there was a Cinzano/Brandivino phase for the younger Bogans-I kid you not), tails (not mullets-they came later and invaded ALL walks of society-remember Howard Jones-no you wouldn’t you are too young?), very tight jeans, complete with testicle-worn patch-etc etc. Flannies came later in the 80s-so Bogan enough for me. However, what you are wearing on your video has more of the touches of 80s fashion. Believe it or not, it was punks that started wearing flannies in the 80s, they became fashionable (as they did again in the 90s grunge era, and even Pseudo Echo had mullets in the 80s-and they were considered very cool at the time. Current Bogans did not make this fashion up-they are just keeping up tradition. If you don’t believe me, research.

The plus sides of the early-Bogan male that they  had both feet firmly on the ground, good value, good fun, huge sense of the ironic-rough around the edges, (as am I) but not Neanderthal-with or without bong.  My brothers are keeping up the tradition. But they are real, decent, funny, sweet working blokes in their twenties.

The Bogan “uniforms” varied according to location, weather etc-ie.a Dandenong Ranges Bogan would not have been seen dead in shorts-stubbies or otherwise. I know, because I was one-well a girl version.

It did not mean that an individual had to be ignorant, racist, thick or sexist (although that was certainly around). I knew a good number of Bogans who were very intelligent and informed, employed, and some went to uni-they also happened to like all of the things I outlined above. It was as much of a lifestyle, code of dress, social circle, music preference, etc, just like many other subcultures-usually linked to a location, or sometimes, but not always, a socio-economic bracket.

It was also purely a Victorian term.

I joined Bogan forum with all good intentions and was asking a legitimate request for assistance with questions for a Bogan event to fund a theatre company charity to raise the awareness of homelessness-because I thought I might get some valid information and be able to share what I was doing.
 I researched the site, which was seemed very informed in terms of a range of definitions, and I thought “Great-I’ll give it a go”. I posted my bit, and yes, it was taking the piss a bit (I still maintain that I am in my rights to-just like Jewish people can make Jewish jokes-and everyone knows that C**t has a “u” in it, not an “ar”, and there is a LOT of exaggeration, on this site, including from yourself Wayne), so I played along).

For my pains, instead, I get a comment, clearly from some sexist pig (too inflammatory?)  that I was a “tryhard” (how does that even work?) but that “ I can probably take a lot of cock”, and then my posting gets taken off altogether.

I want to know why my posting was taken off-is it possible to get a proper answer or shall I expect a lot of crap again? I’ve seen your video and you are clearly old enough for me to have given birth to you,  I’m not convinced that that is your hair, but I may be wrong, so I want to know if you are man enough to take on the task of answering me, or are you going to give me a fresh assault of toilet talk? Your site could be magnificent, but there are some dickheads on your site who are not doing you, or your cause to be respected any favours at all . Believe it or not I shall be talking about this forum and my experience of it in London at the Centre of Australian Studies-yeah I’m a Bogan with a Masters Degree and I CAN BE BOTH. This cashed-up bogan tag is a mystery to me. Yes, it refers directly to my generation, but it seems that the creepy conservatism/racism/homophobia which has developed has been termed "bogan" so we can safely put it somewhere else-that it's the big bad bogans, not "us -the nice middle bracket people"who have become a country of fascist arseholes. It was also clear that some of the posters on your site were not “Bogan” at all, they were neo-nazi, which is linked to the Skinhead subculture, not the Bogan Culture. Seems to me that that mentality is not bogan, it's popular culture-the majority, and that's scary-and you should be worried. Real bogans cop enough negative press. If you watched “Summer Heights High”, a Bogan, according to J’amie, is anyone who went to State School, and it was a blatant insult. Yes it’s a great comedy, but bigotry does not belong anywhere.

I'm a double whammy bogan in a way (Dandenong Ranges and then Frankston), I have stuck up for bogans on many occasions, but what I'm seeing now is that bogan means racist, woman-bashing, ignorant knobhead, where that did not used to be the case-I want to know your thoughts on this.

I ask because I am still organising a Bogan trivia night charity event and I want to celebrate, not denegrate-but if Bogan now means what I found on the Bogan forum, I certainly don’t want to celebrate that-and will gear the show accordingly. I am a QLD bogan (or bevan as they used to call us up here) and have travelled just about everywhere on the QLD east coast from Southport to Torres Stait and a couple of six month stints in outback NSW. I also do a few trips to Melbourne and Sydney now and again for rock concerts and sporting events but a couple of days in either of those shitholes and I`m over it!
